Tree Snail website

Hi HaSTA Teachers,

On Saturday, February 23, 2008, the HaSTA Environmental Committee sponsored a teacher field trip on the Palehua/Palikea trail in the Nature Conservancy Honouliuli Preserve in the Waianae Mountains to study the Hawaiian tree snails. Doctoral student Kevin Hall met us at Palikea to discuss his five year study of the Hawaiian tree snail, Achtinella mustelina.

We have set up a web site for this field trip that you can check out:

The Environmental committee is in the process of planning more teacher field trips in the future. Stay tuned and plan on joining us.

Aloha,

Who Killed the Electric Car? Discussion
lead by Leonard Portner

After watching “Who killed the Electric Car”, Leonard Portner’s curiosity led him to do some research. He found out enough to entice him to try to convert a car, and with the help of a friend, Paul Loewe, embarked on a trial and error journey that lasted nearly a year and resulted in a “new” electric car, and a passion to share the technology and explore the potential for our future. In case you missed the movie, we will be showing excerpts before our discussion. Join us in a lively evening exploring this technology of the future.

National Tropical Botanical Garden

Every summer at the National Tropical Botanical Garden, we partner with Kaua’i Community College, University of Hawai’i, to offer a two week long Science Teachers’ Enrichment Course based at our headquarters on Kaua’i. The course gives middle and high school science teachers an opportunity to enhance their knowledge on tropical biology. I have attached course announcement and course application with detailed information about the course. This information can also be found on our website, www.ntbg.org.
If you could post the announcement or link onto your website it would be greatly appreciated. If you have questions, you may contact me via email or phone.

Thank you,

Hi Teachers,

The Environmental Committee of the Hawaiian Science Teachers Association (HaSTA) will be sponsoring a teacher field trip to look at Achatinella mustelina, the Hawaiian tree snail on Saturday, February 23, 2008. Doctoral student, Kevin Hall will share his knowledge and tell us about his study of the tree snails.

This trip will take us to the Nature Conservancy’s Honouliuli Preserve. We will hike along the crest of the Wai`anae Mountains on the Palehua/Palikea trail (about 4 miles round trip). There will be panoramic views of Nanakuli and Lualualei Valleys on the western side of the crest and Pearl Harbor and the Ko`olau Mountains to the east.

We will see native plants and will definitely see tree snails.

Space is limited! We can only take 15 teachers. Call me to make reservations for this trip. More details will be given later

The 2008 Physics Olympics will be held at Watanabe Hall and the
Physical Science Building on the UH Manoa campus in Honolulu.
Teams of high school students are invited to participate in five fun events based on concepts in physics. The specific events will be announced on the day of the Physics Olympics and will be based on some of the following concepts:

Electric circuits Vectors Motion Experimental methods
Magnetism Pendulum motion Waves Optics
Gravity Friction Energy Heat

Schools may register a maximum of 6 teams. However, only 30 teams
may participate so we may have to limit the number of teams from any one
school. After the entry deadline, schools with multiple teams will be
notified of the final number of teams that will be allowed. All teams
must have at least 3 members and can have no more than 5 members.
Submit one entry form (see below) per team via E-mail or FAX to
Michael Jones at the address/number below. Each student entering the
Bridge Building Contest should have a separate entry form. Bridge
building information and contest rules are available at the following
web site: http://www.iit.edu/~hsbridge

As in the past three years, there will be five events and awards will be
given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each event but there will be no
overall awards. Also, teachers and other observers are welcome to watch
the events and take pictures but they may not answer questions or help
students.
