Hawaii State Science Oympiad-Announcement

Aloha Science Teachers,
Some of you are back at school already and some are preparing to start a new school year full of new opportunities and excitement!
2008 was a great year for us! We had a wonderful tournament in the spring and sent two great teams (Highlands Intermediate School and Farrington High School) to the National Science Olympiad tournament in Washington D.C. The students and teachers on those teams represented their schools and Hawai‘i with dignity and class and showed the whole nation the true meaning of ‘Aloha’.
To add to the excitement, I am pleased to announce that the HSSO committee has chosen the events for the 2009 tournament season. This is an anniversary year in many ways.
This will be the 5th annual Science Olympiad tournament in Hawai‘i and the 25th year for Science Olympiad across the country! In that spirit, we’ve selected 25 fantastic events that will challenge, excite and inspire your students.

For middle school (division B): Amphibians/Reptiles, Ecology (Grasslands/Deserts), Dynamic Planet (Volcanoes/Earthquakes), Fossils, Reach fo the Stars, Trajectory, Environmental Chemistry, Elevated Bridge, Experimental Design and Write It Do It.

For high school (division C): Cell Biology, Disease Detectives, Herpetology, Astronomy, Dynamic Planet (Volcanoes/Earthquakes), Fossils, It’s About Time, Trajectory, Chemistry Lab, Environmental Chemistry, Egg-O-Naut, Elevated Bridge, Junkyard Challenge, Experimental Design and Picture This.

As always, our events are designed to be hands-on/minds-on, team-based activities that will challenge students in their abilities and inspire their creativity and greatness in the various scientific fields.

A couple of new things to share with you…
• The statewide tournament will be on Saturday, March 7th, 2009 at Leeward Community College.
• HSSO will be holding a ‘Coaches Clinic’ in late October/early November for teachers, students, parents, etc. interested in learning more about the Science Olympiad events. Workshops will be given by the individuals and organizations judging events at the statewide tournament in March. There will also be a special session for coaches, especially first-year coaches. The cost will be $50, date and location will be announced shortly.
• Instead of filling out two separate pieces of paperwork, there is only ONE form with a combined fee. The fees have NOT increased. This form can be downloaded from our website (www.hsso.org) and is also attached to this email.
• HSSO is working to put together two regional tournaments specifically for Leeward District and Hawai‘i Island District schools. Information about those events will be forthcoming.

We are very excited about 2009 and we hope you are too! With more events than ever and the promise of more students engaged in great science events, it promises to be a great year for our science/science education community.
We hope you will be a part of the fun by accepting the challenge and joining Science Olympiad!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at hisciolympiad@hotmail.com or you can contact our state director, Franklin Allaire, directly at allaire@hawaii.edu.

Accept the Challenge…Join Science Olympiad!
