NASA Quest Challenge (Grades 5-8)

How would you like to take your students on a scientific journey to the South Pacific and the Moon?

The NASA Quest Challenge titled Exploration Through Navigation: Voyages Across Sea and Space is now open for registration! The purpose of this Challenge is to connect students in grades 5-8 to NASA’s Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) mission while teaching them about different methods of Earth-based and space-based navigation. The major concept or “big idea” behind this Challenge is exploration, with the content centering on navigation skills. The driving question that students will learn to answer is “How will you stay on course?”

During this Challenge, students will first be tasked to chart a course from the Big Island of Hawai’i to Rapa Nui (Easter Island) using ocean navigation skills that were used in early Polynesian exploration. Inside the classroom, students will learn how to identify stars and constellations in the night sky as well as calculate the distance at which a crew can first sight an island from sea.

Weekly challenge questions will be posed for 5 - 8th grade students to compete for prizes to deliver the best answer to us first. Outside of the classroom, students will track the star Enif and as results are posted from around the world students, will determine if there is a relationship between the latitude of the observation site and the star’s altitude at its upper culmination.

Then, in Part II of the Challenge, students will be tasked to chart a course from Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida to one of the lunar poles using navigation skills appropriate for outer space. For both tasks, students will submit their navigation strategy (as a class) to NASA for experts to review. At the end of the Challenge, students will be asked to compare and contrast navigation methods used on Earth and in space.

Global Career Launch Program

My name is David Mariano, I am a Program Manager for the Association for International Practical Training (AIPT), a 501(c)(3) organization that offers cultural and experiential opportunities both in the United States and internationally. I am contacting the Hawaii Science Teachers Association to ask if you would be willing to collaborate with us in reaching out to your members in the Honolulu area regarding our Global Career Launch (GCL) program.

GCL is a summer internship program that provides international university students an opportunity to obtain professional and cultural experience in the United States. This enriching experience will help the selected students develop their global skills and supplement their formal education.

AIPT is seeking employers interested in providing unpaid, six week work experiences in administration, marketing, IT support, finance and accounting to one or more students for the Global Career Launch 2009 internship program. The internships should be located in proximity to public transportation in the area of Honolulu.

AIPT will provide direct assistance to the interns for everything from the intern’s entry visa to their accommodations and transportation to and from work. Employers only need to provide a six-week placement with clear, understandable tasks and sufficient supervision to ensure they are completed.

Previous employers have used interns for various administrative duties, logistical tasks, event planning, technical and software service, market research, and marketing assistance.

There are no fees or paperwork for employers and; as a J-1 visa sponsor, AIPT will ensure all requirements are met for the interns. If this opportunity sounds appealing to you and the Hawaii Science Teachers Association please visit http://www.globalcareerlaunch.org/ for more information or contact me directly.

Join us in becoming an integral part of a unique global experiential learning program.

Sincerely,

David B. Mariano

Marine Science Opportunity for Teachers and Students

Hello:

My name is Mackenzie Manning. I am a marine science educator at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. In partnership with Dave Krupp at Windward Community College, we are offering both a summer high school student marine and environmental science program as well as a teacher training program for summer 2009.

I am aware that Dave was able to post our student program flyer on your website but I was curious about how I would go about posting our teacher application on the website and also if possible in the next issue of Catalyst.

I am also interested in possibly attending the meeting in November to talk more with teachers about both programs.

I’m attaching a pdf of the teacher flyer/application for you to read through. If you could assist me in any of these areas it would be greatly appreciated or if you could direct me to the appropriate person to contact (if you are not that person), that would be appreciated as well.

Thank you for your time!

Dear NSTA Chapter and Associated Group Leaders:
If you were unable to attend our FIRST Online Leadership Institute Web Seminar of the 2008-2009 academic year this past Wednesday night and would like to see the recorded copy of the program, including all saved chat messages, please click here to access the recording. Ken and I hope you are able to continue to gain knowledge that will aid in the growth of your chapter or associated group by viewing the recordings as well as attending the live events.
As a reminder, the topic the other night was Membership Marketing, by yours truly. I’ve attached the final PowerPoint slide set to help you if you view the recording and you miss a slide or two.
We look forward to seeing you at the next Online Leadership Institute Web Seminar, which will take place on January 7, 2009, from 6:30 PM (room opens at 6:00) to 8:00 PM (with extra time for Q & A):
