GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY FOR PHYSICS/PHYSICAL SCIENCE TEACHERS

October 3, 2009
7:30 amto3:00 pm

We will be in Room- 104 in the Science Center.  It’s the 1st room on the left as you come up the stairs from the entrance level.  I will be in the room at about 7:00AM and then we will go over to the auditorium for the talk by Tony Wagner.  We will take a break later in the morning so that you can visit the vendors and displays in the Gates Learning Center.  We will end by 3:00PM.  We are full at this time, others may join us, but I only have enough giveaways(Lab Books, software, and Motion Detectors for 15)

We welcome all high school physics teachers and high school and middle school physical science teachers to attend a workshop which will held in conjunction with the HaSTA Fall Conference at Punahou School Science Center on Saturday, October 3, 2009.

This workshop will run concurrently with the other activities at the conference, including a talk by famous Harvard educator, Tony Wagner. We will build our session around the important events and opportunities for science teachers at this conference.  We don’t want you to miss anything you might find interesting.

This workshop is presented by a mini-grant from AAPT/PTRA  written by Jim Redmond, the AAPT-Hawaii Section Rep.. We will do hands-on physics labs which show a blending of old and neww technologies.  We propose that some grounding in manipulatives and hands-on understanding of physics concepts is important before moving on to more advanced technologies that may have a less obvious physics underpinning.  We will try to blend the labs so that there is a flow between old and new technologies.  You will receive copies of all lessons covered and some take-home items to use in your classrooms.  Please email Jim Redmond: jredmond@hawaii.edu with your desire to be part of this workshop.  You do not have to be a member of AAPT-Hawaii Section or HaSTA to participate, although membership in these organizations would  be a great benefit to your science classroom teaching.  Mahalo, Jim Redmond(808-277-1091)

Summary of what teachers will learn or do:
Ocean acidification is a growing threat to the health of our marine ecosystems and is caused by the progressively increasing absorption of atmospheric CO2 by the ocean. In this session, we will do a hands on experiment with Vernier LabQuest Handlhelds and probes to illustrate the reality of this current danger to our oceans.

“Scienced, SEALed, and Delivered…It’s Yours!”  ( Session 1- Room 103)

I call my class the S.E.A.L. room.  It stands for Science Exploration And Literacy.
I would like to share hands-on, inquiry-based lessons following the Science Notebook approach.  These activities will teach scientific process skills (Observing, Classifying, Measuring, Questioning, Recording Data, Communicating) to students in grades K-3.  Hawaiian culture will also be incorporated.  My goal is to give teachers ideas that they can use immediately in their own classrooms. The presentation might be good for teachers new to the science inquiry process.  I hope the teachers will leave the presentation feeling “Scienced, SEALed, and Delivered.”  It’s theirs!!!
Thank you so much!

SESSION-1

Michelle Buck, Literacy Resource Teacher (Waimänalo Elementary)
Kamehameha Schools/ Community Education Implementation
Literacy Instruction and Support

Name of Workshop:  A Non-Circulating Hydroponic Method for Growing Lettuce

Organization:  Manoa Valley Greens

Presenters:  Ray and Janet Kosaka

Grade Level:  1 to 8

(Sessions 1 and 2 -  Room 108)
Brief Summary:  Providing teachers an opportunity to learn about a simple inexpensive method of growing leafy vegetables, specifically lettuce, through a non-circulating method for use in classroom experiments and lessons.  This method was developed by Dr. Bernard Kratky from the University of Hawaii, CTAHR.   On display will be live growing lettuce in clear containers in various stages from one week to harvest–a wonderful opportunity to see and experience the actual growth process.     We will explain the “how to’s”  in using our Hydroponic Growing Kit and will be open for questions and answers.   Lettuce samples will be available (limited supply).

National Defense Education  Program (NDEP)

(Session 2 - Room 203)

We will discuss our interaction with the schools in our state.
Additionally, if there are exhibitions, we would like to have some
space to demonstrate some of the resources our schools have available
through our program. One session would be great. We will have a few of
our engineers to attend to present to the teachers.
The intend would be to inform the teachers and administrators about
the program and our interaction with the schools, mostly within
Leeward District. We assist elementary, middle and high school teachers by providing STEM training, course material and scientists and engineers from our lab to help demonstrate how science is relevant to the student’s everyday life.
The workshops are explain the program, take teacher input on how to make it work better in their class and introduce them to the various support we offer.
