Chemistry Section Meeting Announcement

21 November 2009

Chemistry and interested teachers are invited to attend the next HaSTA Chemistry Section meeting.  It will be held at LaPietra – Hawaii School for Girls on Saturday Nov. 21st from 10:00 am to noon in Bachman 3, which is the upstairs room of the science building.  Parking is anywhere on campus but the upper parking lot  gives the easiest access to the science building.  Visit www.lapietra.edu for driving directions and a campus map.

This is a great opportunity to meet your colleagues as well as share your favorite lesson, resource, demonstration, program, or new ideas generated from workshops/conferences, or important issues in chemical education.  Please let us know if you would like to be placed on the agenda for the sharing part of the meeting by Nov. 18th.

The first hour of the meeting will focus on GREEN CHEMISTRY.  The featured speaker is Henry Curtis,  Executive Director of Life of the Land, a 40 year old group, whose mission is to preserve and protect the life of the land through sound energy and land use policies and to promote open government through research, education, advocacy and, when necessary, litigation. Mr. Curtis has represented the organization in several biofuel regulatory proceedings before the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission and the Board of Land and Natural Resources.  He also served on Army, Navy and Air Force Boards monitoring clean-ups of hazardous sites. In addition, he has assisted the Judiciary History Center for the last several years by critiquing teachers’ proposals developed in public policy workshops.

Refreshments will be served and door prizes awarded.  Please let us know if you plan to attend the meeting.  Hope to see you there!
