Public Announcement - Community Fishery Workshops

Fishermen, students, and the general public are invited to a series of free community workshops on a number of emerging and ongoing fishery issues and programs. Teachers can use this opportunity to provide themselves and/or their students with hands-on interactions with several agencies and organizations involved in fishery research in Hawaii and have an opportunity to win a GPS unit. Additional educational resource materials and field trip opportunities may be available to teachers upon request by interacting with the representatives at the workshop. The workshops will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Maui Beach Hotel in Kahului, Maui, on Feb. 6, 2010; at the Ala Moana Hotel in Honolulu, Ohau, on Feb. 13, 2010; at the Kauai Beach Resort in Lihue, Kauai, on Feb. 20, 2010; and at the Naniloa Hotel in Hilo, Hawaii, on Feb. 27, 2010.  The workshops include nine booths about community-based management, various tagging projects, community grant opportunities including the Hawaii Seafood Promotion, the Marine Recreational Information Program, and many more.  Presentations will be focused on annual catch limits, catch shares quota management, community development, and marine spatial planning.  Parking will be free/validated, and refreshments will be provided.  Enter to win a door prize, including a hand-held GPS!  For more information, contact the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council, at info.wpcouncil@noaa.gov, phone (808) 522-8220, fax (808) 522-8226, or www.wpcouncil.org.
